The photos were shared through a secret Dropbox account, which reportedly contained hundreds of photos of women throughout all five branches of the armed forces.

The U. Marine Corps officials have called on the Naval Criminal Investigative Service following revelations by Vice News last week that images of female service members had been shared in a Dropbox folder called "Hoes Hoin'. Vice reported that most of the images in the folder show women in military clothing. Some show the women's faces, dog tags, uniforms and name tags. A few are of service members fully clothed, in apparent attempt to shame or discredit them. Some of the photos had been previously shared in other online groups while others appear to be new, Vice said.

In a closed Facebook group called "Marines United," which consisted of 30, active duty and retired members of the United States Armed Forces and British Royal Marines , hundreds of photos of female servicemembers from every branch of the military were distributed. In a post on the original group page, a member wrote, "It would be hilarious if one of these FBI or Naval Criminal Investigative Service fucks found their wife on here. Understand this: I will not accept a request until I can see that the person has served. If you see someone and know they are a fucking snitch, let an admin know. This shit should have never made it to the national fucking news. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has launched an investigation into the incident. Jim Mattis , the Secretary of Defense , said, "The purported actions of civilian and military personnel on social media websites, including some associated with the Marines United group and possibly others, represent egregious violations of the fundamental values we uphold at the Department of Defense.
